Mathews-Dickey Launches Friends Club

A diverse gathering of 60 educators, legal representatives and other concerned citizens convened for the purpose of learning about and supporting the Mathews-Dickey Inaugural Friends Club Campaign on Nov. 13 at the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) Headquarters. The reception, chaired by Hazelwood School District Superintendent Dr. Grayling Tobias and Eckenrode Maupin Attorney Renee Sullivan, is an enhancement of the Club’s comprehensive development efforts.

Sullivan highlighted her efforts to involve members of the legal and medical communities in working with youth in the summer camp. Tobias cited the Club’s impact on his life as a young alumnus and belief in the importance of positive interventions to keep children on the right path.

The reception began with greetings by Mathews-Dickey VP, PR & Special Events Barbara A. Washington highlighting the “It’s Better to Educate than to Incarcerate” initiative to educate youth on the front end to prevent them from falling through the cracks on the back end.

US Bank Senior Vice President Dan Watt addressed the topic of “Why Friends & Planned Giving Campaigns” are needed. He acknowledged the council members in attendance, Adam Randle and Andrew Mitchell, for laying the groundwork to formulize gift acceptance and planned giving instruments with the Club’s Board of Directors and staff.

Also providing testimonials were 20-plus year volunteers Debra Handley, a proud parent, tutor and computer instructor, and Jan Jacobi, a tutor and educator at St. Michael’s School. St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Fifth District Commander Capt. Mary Edwards-Fears offered the law enforcement perspective on teaming up with Mathews-Dickey to keep youth safe and off the streets.

Mathews-Dickey President, CEO & Co-Founder Dr. Martin Luther Mathews offered acknowledgements and introduced two of the Club’s “It’s Better to Educate Than to Incarcerate” Youth Ambassadors James and Virgil Fuller. The young men highlighted the impact of the Club’s programs in making a difference in their educational and leadership skills.

The gathering ended with a performance of the original selection “Celebration” by Mathews-Dickey Urban Music Program Participant and “The Sky is the Limit” Scholarship Winner Tierra “T. Nicole” Wilson. Special thanks to in-kind sponsors of music by Collage Pianist Tim Huskey, catering by the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark and A Little Something Sweet, and the venue provided by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.
